Have the godly ceased?

Psalm 12:1 “Help, LORD, for the godly man ceases! For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.”

The Psalmist appears to intimate the same idea as Elijah who felt alone in relationship to God, 1 Kings 19:18. God had to disabuse Elijah’s pity party and ignorance. The Lord let’s Elijah know he has a remnant of thousands who haven’t bowed their knees to Baal. You may feel alone at this historic moment in time. Social media is silencing voices. The Media only communicates news that is antithetical to righteousness. There’s no dissenting voices allowed. We are in an America we don’t recognize.

God’s word to Elijah brings comfort. Psalm 12 has the same cry for relief, “Help, Lord, for the godly man ceases! For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.” But the Psalmist doesn’t need the LORD to disabuse him. He encouraged himself with the truths of God, “The words of the LORD are pure words. Like silver tried in a furnace, purified seven times. You shall keep them, O LORD.”

The Psalmist is assured that God is going to keep his word. There is comfort in knowing God keeps his promises. There is more comfort if you know what he has said.

Start reading the Psalms everyday. Better yet, start reading from Genesis and see what God communicates. There is hermeneutical skills to interpretation of the Scripture. Yet a plain reading of each book is still very helpful in coming to know God.

Yes, there are still godly men and women in the land. It may seem like they have ceased. They are all around. You can be assured God always has a remnant. God’s word, which has been tested reassures us of that.
